Kayla's Knook Read Out Loud Program

Kayla’s Knook Read Out Loud Program aims to remove students’ lack of confidence in their reading ability as a barrier to early literacy.

What is Kayla's Knook?

Kayla’s Knook is an interactive read out loud program consisting of workshops for students in 2nd-5th grade. Workshops may meet 1-2 times. The students take turns reading out loud in a small group setting in a non-judgmental environment. Reading and writing prompts are used throughout the workshops and are designed to promote active engagement with the text. Through the workshop, students write their own story and are the author of their own book. The goal of Kayla’s Knook is to remove students’ lack of confidence in their reading ability as a barrier to literacy.

Inspiration for Kayla’s Knook

Kayla’s Knook started as my Girl Scout Gold Award project in 2022. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting. It is a take action project that provides a sustainable, lasting benefit to the community. It is an eighty hour project to harness your passion and put your idea into motion. This has inspired me to turn my passion for volunteering and advocating early literacy into a community-driven initiative – Kayla’s Knook Read Out Loud Program.
